Hunker Down & Hot Cocoa

If you poked your nose outside the cabin this morning, you probably felt that tickle in your nostrils that tells you one thing: The Northwoods are awake, even if the thermometer is asleep at the wheel. We are looking at some classic "keep the fire stoked" weather this weekend, with lows dipping down past -30°F.

Now, don't let that scare you off. This is the kind of cold that makes the stars look sharper, the snow crunch louder, and the hot chocolate taste about ten times better. It’s a slow-down kind of weekend. The vibe around the resort is quiet, cozy, and warm. We’ve got the cribbage boards out in the Trading Post and plenty of dry wood stacked high.

Here’s what’s happening in our neck of the woods…

On The Water (The Hard Water, That Is)

The Big Freeze

With these temps, we are making ice faster than a sno-cone machine. We’re seeing solid measurements of 18-22 inches on the main lake. That’s plenty of truck to hold you, but with this cold snap, listen for those big "booms" as the ice expands—it’s just the lake singing its winter song.

The Hot Bite

The Walleye have gone deep to stay warm, hovering right around 20-30 feet. They’re a bit sluggish, so you don’t need to wiggle that lure too much.

For the Pros

It’s a deadstick game this week. Set up a rattle reel with a chub and let it sit. The bite is best right when the sun starts dipping (around 4 PM).

For the Families

Honestly? It’s too cold for bobbers on a bucket. If you don't have a heated house, come see us and we’ll practice casting plugs into a bucket. Same fun, warmer fingers.

On The Trail

Sleds & ATVs

I’ll be straight with you—we’re still waiting on a big dump of snow to cushion the ride. The Taconite and Arrowhead trails are open, but conditions are a bit "thin and bumpy". You’ll find some rocks if you aren’t careful, so take it slow and enjoy the scenery rather than the speed.

Skiing

If you want to glide, head over to Prospect Mountain or the Babbitt Golf Course. They’ve got the groomers out and the base is packed tight. It’s fast snow, so watch your speed on the downhills!

Tim’s “Secret Spot”

Destination: The "Chimney" at Bent Paddle

Why this week

Look, I usually send you to a hidden bay, but with a wind chill warning in effect, the best spot on the map is right in front of the rock fireplace in Cabin 6. It’s got the best draw in the resort.

The Secret

If you do venture out, take the short hike to the mouth of the Stony River. When it’s this cold, you get "sea smoke" rising off the bits of open current. It looks like a cauldron. Just don’t get too close to the edge!

Kidz Club Corner

Activity: The Frozen Bubble Challenge

The Mission

When it hits -20°F, magic happens. We’re mixing up soap, water, and a little corn syrup. We’ll head out to the deck and blow bubbles. Watch closely—they don’t pop, they freeze into crystal snow globes right before your eyes.

The Prize

Best frozen bubble photo gets a free hot cocoa from Janet at the Trading Post.

Weekend Outlook

If you’re looking to warm up with some civilization, here’s what’s going on nearby:

  • Ely: Catch a movie at the Historic State Theater. They’re showing "H Is for Hawk" this Friday. Great popcorn, warm seats.

  • Giants Ridge: If you’re heading down the road for some downhill skiing, stick around for the live music. The band Morningbird is playing Saturday afternoon. Good tunes to thaw your toes to.

Stay warm, check on your neighbors, and remember: There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear (and we sell the good stuff in the shop).
